Festivals & Events
Aarohan
was very active in promoting theatre leading up to the 1991 People’s
Movement, which brought democracy back to Nepal. We organized National
Drama Festivals in 1989 and 1990. Throughout 1988, we organized
Aarohan Saturday, a series of intimate performances at the French
Cultural Center – one of the few venues in the city where
we could produce uncensored drama. Aarohan was actively exploring
the role of theatre in promoting social and political discussion.
Despite censorship and limited spaces for performances, we created
a series of productions articulating the desire of the people for
democracy.
International Festivals and Art exchange
Aarohan has participated in several international theatre festivals
in South Asia (the International Theatre Festival in Dhaka, Bangladesh
and Behranpur, West Bengal, India.) We are participating in the
Images of Asia Festival in Denmark in 2003.
We are active in the Nepal chapter of the International Theatre
Institute, and have hosted and participated in international events
through ITI.
In 2001-2, Aarohan helped coordinate the Conflict Theatre and Democracy
project, funded by the Danish Democracy Fund. We trained activists
from marginalised ethnic groups in Nepal and traveled to India and
Denmark on a joint study and performance tour. See the report of
the program: http://msnepal.org/reports_pubs/conflict_theatre/index.htm
Together with Aalborg Theatre in Denmark, Aarohan has created a
project to explore Ibsen's Doll's House in two different
culture contexts. See www.ibsencrosstheworld.com
