Street Theatre
Aarohan
helped create the street theatre movement in Nepal. We perform in
the Kathmandu Valley, on issues of social justice, democracy and
pluralism. Outside of the valley we make it a point to train local
activists to do the plays, both to involve new people in the theatre
movement and to create drama that is relevant to local circumstances
– language, culture, etc – and sustainable. Many of
the groups we have help create and train are still active.
We have created drama in the streets and village of our countries
on issues such as
• Leprosy Training local groups who are
still continuing the work 5 years later. Campaign throughout the
eastern part of the country. After the street theater on the issue
started, thousands of people have gone for leprosy check-ups and
local leprosy hospitals have had to double their working days from
3 to 6 days a week to manage the increase in patients
• HIV/Aids Five districts in Western Nepal
and three jails in Kathmandu.
• Sanitation We trained 3 local groups,
each of which trained three other groups in their district. Some
of the groups are still working.
• Environment and Population We performed
in 3 districts, formed local groups and trained them.
• Election on an activist basis Aarohan
performed 20 plays in the streets of Kathmandu to mobilize voters
to use their new rights.
• We have also performed and trained groups on issues of
community forestry, integrated community development, education,
etc.
